Live at the Archway: Jah Pan - The Archway Under the Manhattan Bridge

Live at the Archway is back for a third season of free performances at the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge. This week features New York City’s preeminent steel drum band ensemble, Jah Pan. The group is comprised largely of musicians from Trinidad and Tobago­­the country that created steel drums (“pans”), and is home to the majority of the world’s best players. Jah Pan’s steel drum, calypso musicians, and reggae singers have performed all over the world at events ranging from backyard parties to Presidential receptions, on NBC’s TODAY Show, at the U.S. Tennis Open, on television, and in major motion pictures.

The Poetry Society of New York will once again invite attendees to come together for this free two-day festival to celebrate New York’s vibrant poetry community. The event will include over 75 poetry organizations and 250 poets on its main stages, a Vendor’s Village where local booksellers, artists and craft makers will sell their wares, healthy and delicious food options, a beer and wine garden, poetry-inspired installation art throughout, The Ring of Daisies open mic area, the Commanding Officer’s House, an exclusive VIP area offering free refreshments to festival sponsors and Poetry Society of New York members, and the Children’s Festival. 2017 Headliners include Aja Monet, Sapphire, Deborah Landau, and Patrick Phillips.

The Police Athletic League (PAL) will again close off streets and use playgrounds and parks throughout New York City to provide children with safe, supervised places to enjoy outdoor summer activities. Glide along the water while kayaking with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse at the Pier 2 floating dock. Children younger than 18 must have an adult guardian present. All levels are welcome and no experience is necessary.

Rowing on Prospect Park Lake - The Well House

The Village Community Boathouse is offering free public rowing on Prospect Park Lake this summer. Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the ample waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures. Boats are launched from the ramp on Well House Drive in the southwest corner of the lake. Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each participant must sign a waiver; kids and teens younger than 18 must be escorted by a parent.

The Boardwalk Grill is open, Uncle Louie G’s ices are cooling, the cotton candy and popcorn carts are ready to roll, and warm weather fun is just getting started at the boardwalk. City Parks Foundation Free Summer Sports - Parks around New York City

This free sports program provides tennis, golf, soccer, track and field, and fitness instruction and use of equipment for over 14,000 New York City children during the summer months. There are activities available for ages 6-16 years old in 39 parks across the five boroughs. Lessons for kids are offered at all skill levels. The fun includes free beginner lessons, tournaments, leagues, excellence programs and special events such as a tennis tournament at Flushing Meadows Tennis Center. Sign up and pre-registration required. See website for details and sign up early to avoid disappointment. The emphasis of the program is not only on learning the basics of the sport, but also on developing self-esteem, discipline and sportsmanship.

Karaoke and Fireworks - Coney Island Beach and Boardwalk

Enjoy singing karaoke with family and friends on the Coney Island Boardwalk in front of Deno's Wonder Wheel. Then watch the fireworks illuminate the sky! The party starts at 7pm and goes until 11pm. The fireworks show is at 9:30pm.

Pop-Up Pool - Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park provides a great way to beat the summer heat with the Pop-Up Pool! The pool is 30 by 50 feet in size, and maxes out at an easy 3.5 feet deep—making it just right for families with smaller kids. Swimmers of all ages and levels are welcome to enter daily from 10 am to 6 pm for 45-minute sessions. Swimming lessons are also available.

Yoga in the Garden - Kosciuszko Garden Learning Center

Movie Night - Narrows Botanical Garden

Anish Kapoor: Descension - Brooklyn Bridge Park - Pier 1 Entrance

World-renowned artist Anish Kapoor’s Descension comes to New York for the first time as part of Public Art Fund’s 40th Anniversary season. Kapoor, known for sculptures like Cloud Gate in Chicago’s Millennium Park, previously installed Descension at India’s Kochi-Muziris biennale in 2014 and at Versailles in 2015. Descension creates a negative space alive with energy, continuously in process, that invites audiences to peer into its depths. Through the piece, Kapoor blurs the boundaries between nature, landscape, and art, allowing us to perceive space differently.

During TankerTime, PortSide NewYork opens the main deck of the tanker MARY A. WHALEN to the public for passive enjoyment. Hammocks, tables, chairs, stools, info about the ship, and books from the maritime library to read while aboard will be provided. In 2017, during Sunset TankerTime on Second Sundays, we introduce a jam session that starts at 9pm with musicians playing music in the various traditions of the Mediterranean.

CityParks Puppetmobile: 'Cinderella Samba' - Various NYC parks throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island

As Brazil continues to celebrate the 100th anniversary of samba, commemorated in 2016, the CityParks PuppetMobile will bring the magic and grandeur of Rio de Janeiro’s world-famous Carnaval festivities to neighborhood parks across the five boroughs with over 100 free performances of Cinderella Samba. Returning to the PuppetMobile stage for the first time since its highly acclaimed debut in 2007, Cinderella Samba is a contemporary twist on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. The CityParks PuppetMobile production sets the timeless tale in the lush landscape of Brazil, where, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella attends Rio de Janeiro's biggest Carnaval gala and dances the samba with Prince Paulo himself. After Cinderella is forced to flee the gala just before midnight, the prince sets out to find the mystery woman who stole his heart, in hopes of marrying her.

Opening of the Uplands - Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 5

Brooklyn Bridge Park has opened 3.4 acres of new parkland at the Pier 5 uplands. The uplands expands the Park’s green space east of the Picnic Peninsula, adding sloped and terraced lawns, a grove with a flexible seating area, and a sound attenuating berm to reduce traffic noise. The underlying design principal is to provide a restful counterpoint to the activities at the adjacent Pier 5 sports fields and Picnic Peninsula.

Library Lab: Coding - Brooklyn Public Library, Central Branch

Library Lab is Brooklyn Public Library’s dynamic learning enrichment program for children (ages 6 to 10) and their families. Explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math concepts with fun, free activities that will spark curiosity through hands-on experiments. New York Road Runners Open Run - Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 6

Open Run is a new community-based initiative that empowers local volunteers to bring free weekly runs to local neighborhood parks all over NYC. All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on park, but they are between 2.5-3 miles. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home ? bag check is not provided. No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all ages, experience levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome.
